The Long And Winding Road......

"Beatles for Sale" is finally for sale on iTunes — along with the rest of the Fab Four's albums, from "Please Please Me" to "Revolver" to "Abbey Road."

Until now, to listen to Beatles songs on iPods, you'd have to obtain a CD and "rip" an online version of it — or find someone who already has, legalities aside.

I think Mr Jobs has executed a pretty shrewd strategic move here. He played up this announcement as something huge, knowing that this would ensure lots of media attention. So while the final announcement might seem anti-climactic, it serves an important business purpose: getting to the 50+ market with his products.

I'm not saying that there aren't plenty of 50+ people out there with iPods, iPhones, iPads, etc. But if anything is going to bring the holdouts running, it is The Beatles.

I am not an Apple worshipper. I do like his sense of business strategy though. Now he has opened the door for his company to sell more effectively to the largest single demographic group in this country. He probably doesn't care if the 20-somethings download a single Beatles song...they're already his customers by and large anyway.
